The Pharmacist works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager and Director of Pharmacy, and is responsible for the safe and efficient compounding and dispensing of prescribed drugs. The Pharmacist also accuratley maintains legally required and other departmental records and assists in inventory control measures, participates in departmental and hospital training and orientation programs, and provides professional drug information/advise to members of the hospital, medical and nursing staff.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Clinical Expertise
-Exhibits expertise by accurately dispensing I.V. and irrigating solutions, mixing I.V. additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic techniques with "MIC Units".
-Exhibits expertise by consulting with physicians and nurses concerning the availability, form side effect, and/or therapeutic or compatibility issues resulting from a drug order.
-Exhibits expertise by interpreting physician orders, chooses appropriate drug or I.V. solution to ensure safety.
-Exhibits expertise by making appropriate therapeutic substitutions and other conversions (IV to PO) as approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
-Exhibits expertise by continually increasing knowledge of drugs to perform more effectively as a hospital pharmacist and drug information consultant.Work Organization
-Exhibits good work organization by consistently observes and supervises the work performance of the pharmacy technicians to ensure adherence to established standards.
-Exhibits good work organization by delegating other responsibilities in order to keep patient care the number one priority.
-Exhibits good work organization by consistently demonstrates an ability to keep up with patient workload and uses supportive staff in an efficient and cost conscious manner.
-Exhibits good work organization by responding to changes in the workload schedule as necessary; continually using time in a productive manner.
-Exhibits good work organization by demonstrating a concern for cleanliness of self and work area by practicing infection control for the protection of patient and self. Appropriate Documentation
-Maintains appropriate documentation by always reviewing and interpreting prescriptions upon receipt.
-Maintains appropriate documentation by carefully reviewing prescriptions filled by supportive personnel to ensure the drug and dosage instructions are correct.
-Maintains appropriate documentation by documenting all therapeutic interventions.
-Maintains appropriate documentation by regularly surveying nursing units to ensure proper storage of medication and expiration date monitoring while also monitoring controlled records for assigned nursing units.Professional
-Exhibits professionalism by being courteous and maintaining good rapport and working relationships with pharmacy staff and other employees, patients and guest of STJMC.
-Exhibits professionalism by seeking information necessary for accurate completion of job duties, while assuming personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.

-Exhibits professionalism by maintaining a professional appearance, including being clean and well groomed, and observing the dress code policy and procedures.

Other: Excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills are required. The ability to operate various office and/or pharmacy equipment is required.
Preferred Education: Master's degree preferred.
