Building Scientist
Payette seeks a talented Building Scientist to share in our passion for design and reinforce the firm's expertise in advanced technology and sustainability. Our collaborative practice focuses on building types that typically possess high baseline energy intensities, including research laboratories, higher educational facilities for science, and healthcare facilities of all types. Such building programs afford several challenges and opportunities that the Payette Building Science team helps overcome and realize in practice.
The ideal candidate will be working within the Building Science group, informing project teams through personal expertise and computer modeling, while assisting on research initiatives that range from academic literature reviews to software tool development. She or he will serve as an integral design team member beginning with early conceptual studies that analyze the impact of design options, ultimately helping develop/propose new solutions.
Candidates should possess the following prerequisite qualifications for this position:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering and/or Building Science.
- Knowledge of fundamental principles of building physics and awareness of metrics used to quantify different dimensions of building performance is required.
- Proficiency in energy and daylight modeling software is highly desirable. LEED accreditation is a plus.
- Experience with Rhino and Grasshopper is preferred.
Other position qualifications include: Interest in building science and sustainable design.
- Strong design and graphic skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills with various levels of staff.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks, collaborate on large teams, and work well under deadlines.
- An intuition of building physics that enable the candidate to act as a resource for design teams and advise on the efficacy of proposed design solutions.
- Experience leading or carrying out research initiatives that advance the practice's understanding of how buildings function both technically and socially.
- Support and assist with Payette's current Building Science initiatives and projects.
- A desire to analyze the performance of past and current Payette projects in order to document the evolution of design solutions and identify common technical challenges.
- An ability to assist with the firm's reporting and realization of the AIA 2030 Commitment goals.
- Mentoring skills and the ability to instruct staff in the use of building performance modeling software.
- Knowledge or experience with Python, JavaScript (including D3 and three.js) is particularly helpful for in-house software development.
- LEED accreditation and/or knowledge of the LEED process is a plus.
