The Department of Medicinal Chemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1. This position requires expertise in cell culture, hydrogen/deuterium-exchange mass spectrometry, protein expression, and protein purification by FPLC and HPLC. This position requires the ability to effectively perform research and take responsibility for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness for lab sub-projects.
The successful applicant will join a research project at the interface of biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, and vaccine design. Our work focuses on structural and functional studies of influenza virus and HIV cell entry machinery with translational applications in development of vaccines and virus inhibitors. The research is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, which provides the opportunity to interact with scientists from different fields.
Main research responsibilities include:
•Maintain cell culture
•Express and purify viral glycoproteins and other proteins such as DC-SIGN and antibodies by transient transfection of mammalian cells
•Analyze protein structure and organization by structural mass spectrometry, specifically hydrogen/deuterium-exchange mass spectrometry
•Carry out rigorous biochemical and biophysical analysis of proteins
•Quantitative ligand binding assays using Octet biolayer interferometry
- Analyze, compile and prepare data for publications and grant applications.
- Help to train and oversee other lab members in select methods such as cryo-EM, virus growth, and purification.

Requirements:
Bachelors degree or higher in biochemistry or related fields, and at least 1 year of experience in biological research wet lab environment. Experience with protein purification, biolayer interferometry for quantitative ligand binding measurements, and hydrogen/deuterium-exchange mass spectrometry analysis of protein structure.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
