Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program
Position Description:
The UWMC Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner Fellowship helps prepare new postgraduate nurse practitioners to utilize evidenced based practice and develop specialized skills to care for chronic and acutely ill patients across the continuum of cardiovascular specialty areas.
The UWMC ARNP Fellowship program is a planned, comprehensive program through which newly licensed ARNPs can acquire knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors to deliver safe, quality care that meets standards of practice at UWMC. The Fellowship includes practice-based experiences, didactic materials, and supplemental activities to promote nursing professional development in the area of cardiovascular advanced practice nursing.
Fellows will be employed as teaching associates in the Department of Surgery, University of Washington School of Medicine. Salary and benefits are consistent with national standards for Post Graduate Fellowships.
MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current and valid state Registered Nurse Licensure, Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program, and eligible for licensure in Washington State
2. Nationally Certified ARNP
3. Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
4. Effective interpersonal, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
5. Training and experience in the provision of cardiovascular nursing including initial assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and management of patients.
• The fellow will develop knowledge of evidenced based practices in the following focus areas:
o General cardiology including cardiovascular risk assessment
o Cardiology Diagnostics
o Electrophysiology
o Interventional Cardiology
o Vascular Surgery
o Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant
o Adult Congenital Heart Disease
o Mechanical Circulatory Support
o Structural Heart Disease
o Cardiothoracic Surgery
• The fellow will develop skill and experience in performing:
o Cardiovascular exam
o Developing patient focused treatment plans
o Point of care echocardiography
o Management of ventricular assist devices
o Presenting teaching conferences or educational rounds
• The fellow will develop an understanding of cardiovascular health care topics including:
o Issues related to the care of frail elderly and vulnerable populations with cardiovascular disease
o Drug safety and pharmacologic management of cardiovascular disease
o Equitable allocation of limited health care resources in the treatment of cardiovascular disease
o Nurse practitioner scope of practice in highly specialized areas of care
o Interprofessional team collaboration and best practice standards
Rotations: (Rotations may not be sequential due to scheduling demands)
Two week orientation (Medical Staff On-boarding, department locations, staff introductions, one week didactic Boot Camp)
